WADING RIVER – The changing of the guard took place Sunday afternoon. A hungover Jewish Shohei unceremoniously picked up the Home Depot bucket, and officially took the keys to MVP, serving as its fourth general manager in history.

A decade ago, Jon was a prodigy who could drink like a father and move like a son. Now, he has transformed into the league’s best two-way and, for the first-time, will enter the season as “JewM”.

Season Preview: A Return to the Old Testament

Despite MVP’s conversion, and 2025 DSSL title, it couldn’t keep MVP, and part-time Jew, Tom Brady, from departing for a Montana league after a record-breaking season. It is only the second time in sports history where an MVP switched clubs via free agency that offseason (Bonds, 1992).

To add salt in the wound, gold glove shortstop and team captain, Kyle Baylous, shipped up to Boston, citing “career opportunities”. KB claims he will be around for August, giving the JM defensive leverage when he’ll need it most; Brady, however, is unlikely to play until 2027, maybe (Sources).

Meanwhile, the battle to retain current MVP talent continues, but is easing. 2025 ROY, CJ, is back, and the latest in Page Six indicates Donnie will be spending more time on the island than anticipated.

However, one holdout remains: John Cirincione. The two-time batting champ is looking to re-sign a long-term deal, and is willing to play elsewhere unless the JM budges (Developing).

The good news is a lot of familiar faces are returning: Pat, 1-Leg, Mullahey, Ev, Shane, & Big Z – who ties the knot this July! Plenty of championship pedigree primed to defend the title.

Pair that with an influx of DSSL rookies, and you’ve got a complete roster. The JM went to work this offseason, signing FIVE players to round out the defending champs. Scouting reports from credible sources below:

  • Bua (OF): Perfect fit to cover a lot of grass with power/speed threat as tablesetter
  • McPartland (Rover): Defensively versatile and smooth-swinging competitor
  • Travis (INF): Plus power and arm over at the hot corner
  • Tom (INF): Taller version of Baylous: good speed, consistent contact and defense
  • Rob (C): Will perform National Anthem, early 1-Leg TOTY Award nominee

It’s clear Rich saw the gaps left in the offseason, and closed them with what many anticipate to be the best MVP rookie class in years.

Player to Watch: Everett Wehr, LF

Eyes will be glued to explosive outfielder, Everett Wehr, and for good reason. For the first time in his career, Wehr will be the outfield’s shotcaller.

Throughout the years, MVP’s golden boy has made it widely known he’d like to be the club’s first triple crown winner, a feat notoriously too tall for MVP great, Dave Wynkoop.

In an MVP Insider exclusive, Wehr went on record when asked if that remained the goal as he enters his fifth year in the league:

“Yes, the triple crown will be mine; I don’t have to coach shitty 10u baseball players, so tally stats should be mine. Easily.”

Everett Wehr

Bravado from the MVP outfield is far from a rarity, but like others, Ev has backed it up. Since 2023, he has led the team in HRs (16) & RBIs (62) while collecting consecutive gold gloves in 2024-2025. The last hurdle? The ever-looming batting title, with his best finish at 4th, hitting .667 in 2023.

He also sits 4th in BA (.618) amongst qualified hitters during that stretch.

MVP Sportsbook currently has Wehr favorited to win the Batting Title at +450.

Batting Title Update: Season Preview

History

The batting title is MVP’s most coveted award, as fewer men have claimed the title than walked on the moon.

2026 represents the most interesting field in a while, especially considering no former winners are likely to qualify for the title (21 ABs).

I set out to write this piece about why I believed it could be Pat to take home the crown, and after speaking with him on Saturday, my confidence – for the most part – is unwavered. Should he deliver on the approach we discussed, he’s got a great chance.

That said, there are a handful of names that make a strong case: Ev, JM, CJ, Shane, Z, and a few rookies, which would mark only the second time one claims the title (2018).

Odds below:

Ev+450 (+800 to win triple crown)
Jewish Shohei+550
