2008

MVP def. Shawshank Redemption, Score Unknown

This rag tag group that left the DSSL for nearly 20 years had returned. This time, they would debut a new name: MVP. Heading into the finals, it was considered to be one of the most lop-sided finals odds in DSSL history.

The incumbent champion, Shawshank Redemption, was mowing through the DSSL with ease throughout the 2000s, and it was 2008 where they met an unfamiliar group whose roots ran deep in the league’s history. Unfazed by the Shawshank run of dominance, a scrappy MVP squad outmatched the heroin-ridden champs, shocking the world, and restoring order back to the light side.

This game unfortunately took place before both cameras, and scorebooks, were invented, making the score and content unknown outside the final result.

2012

MVP def. Dugouts, 14-11

After settling into the DSSL, MVP spent several seasons trying to claw its way back to the title game. That breakthrough finally came in 2012, sparked by the addition of two rookies who shifted the trajectory of the franchise.

With Ryan James and Muscles in the fold, MVP suddenly looked different: more athletic, and notably younger, as the aging infield gave way to a new core in their 20s.

The pairing’s impact would be felt almost immediately. MVP powered through the playoffs and earned a showdown with the Dugouts, the most decorated team in DSSL history. It was more than just a championship matchup, it was the continuation of one of the league’s longest-running rivalries, dating back to their shared roots in the hallways of SWR in the 1980s.

Like 2008, the scorebook was written on the back of the last known Yellow Pages in the county, leaving the box score a mystery, as MVP made history with their second title.

2019

MVP Brew Crew def. Flying Rutabagas, 18-12

Finals MVP: Joe Mullahey, Game-Saving Play at the Plate in Final Career Game

Widely considered to be the greatest MVP team of all-time, the 2019 club struck lightning in a bottle, and looked the part, too. For the first time in team history, MVP would wear jerseys sporting their newly adopted name, “Brew Crew”, a nod to Jay’s countless beer contributions.

Heading into the finals, MVP faced a familiar foe. In the two prior years, MVP’s season ended at the hands of the Bagas, who entered the finals very confident in their quest for a three-peat. One Baga blogger went on to antagonize the new MVP additions, citing the GM’s Brew Crew movement to consist of nothing more than “Young Douchebags”.

Hungry and inspired, the Tom Loesch-led MVP rallied late, halting the Bagas’ three-peat dreams, and tying them in all-time DSSL titles (3) even though they had existed when the first Bush was president.

The game’s defining moment came at the plate, where veteran Big Joe Mullahey applied the tag through a seismic collision with the Baga GM, King James, capping a perfect relay, shutting down Bagas’ best chance at a comeback, and dethroning the defending champs.

Following the title, a chunk of MVP’s original cast used the 2020 pandemic as a catalyst for softball-free futures. Legend has it that during that summer, 2020, the group re-united for a Field of Dreams exhibition at Rocketship Park with MVP v. Brew Crew in one of the greatest games never seen, followed by a pool party at Wynkoop’s.

2022

MVP Brew Crew def. Dugouts 9-5

Finals MVP: Tom Brady, 2-2 (1 Run, 4 RBIs, Go-Ahead 2-Run 3B in 5th)

Coming off a late-inning comeback against the defending champion Boys, MVP stepped into the 2022 Finals as the heavy favorites under their new GM, despite dropping the regular season finale to the Dugouts just a few weeks prior.

Ahead of the game, MVP had twenty players dressed, expecting to play, with a select few willing to coach instead. However, the turnout caught the attention of DSSL Commissioner, Scott Schmidt, who compared the turnout to “an army”, and, on that day, MVP would unite like one.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the 4th, the all-time champions Dugouts fell victim to a classic MVP rally, which culminated in a go-ahead two-run triple from Tom Brady making it a 5-3 ballgame.

MVP never looked back, controlling the narrative throughout, totaling nine runs and holding the Dugouts to five with stellar defense all-around.

After winning their fourth title, MVP officially surpassed the Bagas in all-time titles.

The 2022 team saw one of the most enticing batting titles of all-time. A record four (4) qualified hitters finished the year at .700+ (GM, RJ, Muscles, & Rizz). However, RJ’s 13 ABs (10/13) just crossed the then 12 AB qualification for a batting title. Rizz, who hit .755 — which would’ve been a then franchise-record BA across a true season (21 ABs) — had been snubbed.

Donned the “Rizzi Rule”, MVP changed its AB-minimum to 21 following the season to avoid such controversy again.

2023

MVP Brew Crew def. Goblins 10-9 (F/11)

Finals MVP: Everett Wehr, 5-6 (2 Runs, 2 RBIs, 3 2Bs, Game-Tying Run in 9th)

The defending champs cruised through the 2023 season and bracket, meeting the up-and-coming, Goblins, in the Finals to defend their crown. Once again, MVP came in as the favorite having scored nearly 40 runs on the youngsters earlier that season.

Surprisingly, it was the Goblins who led up until the final out of the 9th.

With the tying run on first, and one out left in MVP’s season, it was up to Shane White. Since the start of the game, he had been heckled, successfully, by a group of shirtless prepubescent boys, but when he smoked a doubled, driving home Pat and Ev, who made an incredible effort avoiding a tag, sent the game to extras and MVP’s dugout into a frenzy.

Unbelievable defense plays continued on both sides, featuring one of the greatest game-saving catches ever made by an unknown Goblin outfielder against Mullahey, in the 10th. However, MVP had the final word as Cirincione drove in the GM to seal the club’s fifth title in the 11th, and their first repeat championship.

MVP’s 2023 unit was considered the best offense before 2025, hitting .602 and crushing 23 homers, led by Finals MVP, Ev Wehr, who went on to set the then total bases (62) and RBI (25) records, and became the first player to score and knock in 20+ runs in the same year (23 Runs & 25 RBIs).

Meanwhile, Bettenhauser secured a franchise-record third batting title, besting the Jewish Shohei, who was the first pitcher to hit .700 for MVP, ever.

2025

MVP Brew Crew def. Boys 11-10 (F/11)

Finals MVP: Alex Bettenhauser, 3-4 (3 Runs, 2 RBIs, 2-Run HR in 1st)

After having aspirations of three-peat vanish in 2024, MVP’s record-breaking 2025 offense fought their way into the finals looking to change the narrative.

The Boys proved in 2024 that 2021 was no fluke, so MVP came prepared for a war.

That’s exactly what happened. A back-and-forth battle through four frames, the Boys erupted with five runs in the fifth, doubling MVP, making the score 10-5. Unnerved, MVP chipped away with a few runs here, and there.

In the fifth, a run was scored by One Leg off the bat of postseason hero, Ryan Mullahey, followed by a three-run rally in the 6th, which scored KB, GM, and Brady, the latter two via a two-out double from Munchie. And, a Z-Dubs sac fly in the 7th aided in tying the game.

After some great defensive plays on both sides, the long-time heart and soul of MVP, John Merrill, stepped to the plate in the 11th, hoping to summon the same magic he found when MVP was down five earlier.

He singled, advanced to second, and with one out, tagged from second to third on a routine fly ball. As he was hustling to third, a panicked Boys infielder overthrew, well, everything, granting John an easy pass for the final 60 feet, securing MVP’s sixth DSSL title all-time.

The 2025 club is the greatest offensive team of all-time, with nearly every single-season record being broken.

Led by Tom Brady, the only MVP player to record 30 Runs and 40 RBIs, and the Bettenhauser brothers, who each broke a single-season franchise record: batting average (Alex, .872) and hits (Nick, 43), MVP’s 2025 title cemented the lineup as the club’s “Murderer’s Row”.
