THE BREW CREW WINS THE PENNANT!!

Last night, the big league’s “Brew Crew” upended the Dodgers’ quest for baseball’s first 3-peat since the 2000 Yankees. Thank the lord.

What some may not know is that we’ve seen this before…

Here’s a short story about the 2019 MVP Brew Crew, and their path to knocking off a rival’s quest for 3-peat glory.

The year is 2017 and MVP is the league’s Rolling Stoners. The club enters the postseason against a formidable Baga lineup, one that ultimately demolishes them at the Tennis Courts, 15-6.

The Bagas went on to cruise through the 2017 DSSL Title game versus the extinct Benny’s en route to their second title (2004).

The year is 2018 and MVP has added a wave of young players.

MVP dominates an aging DSSL with the franchise’s first undefeated regular season (10-0). After a first-round bye, MVP’s second round met two adversaries: the Bagas and the rain. Instead of a rainout, the semi-finals matchup was jammed into right field of the girls’ softball field. Ultimately creating for a short porch that favored the left-handed-centric Baga lineup.

As the top seed, Loesch’s decision to play the game on that field, with that configuration, is considered to be one of his worst decisions as MVP’s GM. Trailing by six in the bottom of the ninth, MVP scored four, bringing the tying run to the plate without any luck, losing 17-15. The main killer, of course, was the long ball, the Bagas’ three to MVP’s one (R. Mullahey).

In the 2018 Finals, the Bagas defeated the Dugouts to defend their title.

In 2019, a dynamic rookie pairing of KB and Brady, and the return of former stars, Ryan James & Joey Muscles, took MVP to the next level.

Before the season, MVP’s GM, Tom Loesch, leveraged some newfound uniform connections within the clubhouse to his advantage. For a long time, MVP wore M.V.P. Irrigation tees and vests, sporting similar colors the organization dons today. However, there was never an actual uniform dedicated to the softball club, simply a softball team outfitted by an irrigation company.

Introducing the “Brew Crew”

After years of selfless giving in the form of free beer by player-sponsor, Jay White, Loesch agreed it was time to give some love to our other sponsor, the Village Beverage. This would fall under one of the better decisions from the Loesch Administration.

For years, MVP was synonymous with its lead sponsor, but the clubhouse was struggling with something bigger: an identity. The roster was aging, its competitive edge was fading, and management began sprinkling in younger players in an effort to remain relevant. The move was met with skepticism around the DSSL, particularly from the league’s old guard and especially inside MVP’s clubhouse, who saw it as a departure from what MVP had always been: a place to escape children.

While the team couldn’t agree on much, a few things still united the clubhouse. There was beer, which had been a staple of the mid-game banter and postgame libations, and bullshitting about a shared disdain for a Bagas pitcher who shall not be named.

Most importantly, those moments revealed that MVP’s culture had become bigger than its namesake sponsor.

Inspired by the vibrant colors of ’80s pro baseball and M.V.P. Irrigation “uniforms”, MVP designed its look to meet the very demanding specifications of Wynkoop’s biceps, releasing its first official jersey-vest in 2019 and sporting its new nickname across the front, “Brew Crew.”

It took some adjusting for clubs like the Bagas, Benny’s, and Dugouts to see MVP in anything other than t-shirts, and they were certainly jealous to see a team looking as good as MVP did.

And, when you look good, you play good.

The 2019 Brew Crew steamrolled the then “Bad News Boys” in the quarter-finals, and blew past the 2018 finalists, Dugouts, in the semis.

The Bagas Eat Their Words

Ahead of the 2019 DSSL Finals, the Bagas were confident, coming off two straight titles, and pushed MVP out of their way en route to both of those trophies; what would make the MVP “Brew Crew” any different?

To them, a name change and new jerseys were the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig. They called the young players on MVP “Young Douchebags“, and claimed it was rooted in rumors of charging the mound against the aforementioned Baga pitcher.

Prior to Championship Sunday, MVP caught wind of the Bagas’ overzealous comments on their blog, and, everyone read it. For the first time, the whole team – young or old – had one single goal in mind: beat the fucking Bagas.

The fiery MVP GM focused every ounce of his competitive rage into his pre-game speech. His words were backed up by MVP’s original bromance: Joe Mullahey and Dave Wynkoop. The pair of former batting champs were hungry for a title, and growing really tired of the Bagas, especially after considering the Bagas had surpassed MVP in all-time DSSL Titles (3-2) after 2018.

MVP had a much stronger club in both unity and talent this time around. Trailing late, MVP rallied in the 7th to take the lead.

In the bottom half, with the tying run at the plate and two outs, the Bagas GM drilled a ball, splitting the centerfield gap, surely a game-tying homer for the Bagas…

Cut off by MVP’s douchiest outfielder and zipped in to Ryan James, it was the perfect storm brewing as the throw came in from shallow center and the Bagas GM began rounding third.

The game’s defining moment came at the plate, where veteran “Big Joe” Mullahey applied the tag through a seismic collision, capping a perfect relay from three generations of MVP players, and shutting down the Bagas’ best chance at a comeback.

The Bagas never scored again in 2019.

Meanwhile, the Young Douchebags added some insurance in the later frames to close the door on MVP’s most triumphant championship of all-time!
