MVP never got off to a good start as the only thing colder than their beer, was the lineup in their Opening Day loss to the Gerard-less Bagas 8-7. The moves made this offseason to add depth by new management did not materialize in Sunday morning’s defeat as only 3 MVP hitters recorded multiple hits and only 2 extra-base hits, quite possibly franchise record-lows.
MVP put on 1 run in the top of the 1st after a two-out rally led by Shane, J-Rich, & Rizz which was cut short as Rich attempted to stretch it to 3rd on a single. A valiant effort was made, but it was clear he was a dead duck. The Bagas came back with a couple runs of their own and had it not been for a Pio-like diving catch by London in center, the new MVP GM would’ve been in even hotter water.
MVP took the momentum sparked from the catch and put on an additional 2 runs in the top of the 2nd and shut down the Bagas in the bottom half of the inning.
What happened from there?
Nothing but 0’s for MVP until the 7th. MVP was able to keep the Bagas at bay throughout that time, holding them to only 5 runs.
Trailing 5-3 in the 7th, MVP came back with a 3-run inning, kickstarted by the savvy one-legged veteran, John Merrill. Merrill advanced to 3rd on a double by London and ultimately scored following a base hit by Captain Baylous. Both of them would score later in the inning to cap off the 3-run 7th. After a clean bottom of the 7th, it appeared MVP had positioned themselves to secure yet another victory against the Bagas.
MVP even added an insurance run in the top of the 8th when 2-time batting champion John Cirincione pinched hit for RJ (after a forgettable performance by the key MVP signing) and drove home Pat Biemer (team-high 2 runs scored), making the score 7-5 going into the bottom of the 8th.
*Cue the Circus Music*
The bottom of the 8th was nothing short of disastrous for MVP as a third base without Munch was painful to watch. His departure to London will clearly leave a question mark as to who can take on the job. Multiple MVP players attempted to fill the void, but little success was to be had. MVP unraveled and gave away 3 runs and found themselves trailing 8-7 as the top of the 9th rolled around.
Did MVP have a rally in them?
No.
8-7 Bagas.
