The theme for MVP on Sunday: “You look good, you play good.”

Enthusiasm surrounding the debut of MVP’s new uniforms definitely played a role in the bats being awake early in their 11-5 win against the Alaskan Bullworms.

The other big factor in MVP’s win?

A better shortstop.

Nick “Munch” Bettenhauser (2-4, Run, RBI) made his first, and possibly only, appearance for MVP in the regular season as he departs for London this week and played a solid shortstop for an MVP team that was desperate for any infielders to show up.

MVP took an early 1-0 lead after Nick Rizzi (team-high 4 hits on the day) drove home London (3-4, 3 Runs, 2 RBIs) and a clean bottom of the 1st was surely a result of Ryan James NOT playing shortstop. Although he will be needed very badly next week, no more communions.

The Bullworms put on a 2 spot in the bottom of the 2nd and MVP found themselves down yet again.

Would MVP finally repsond?

In the top of the 3rd, MVP scored 7 runs which is the same amount they scored in total against the Bagas last Sunday. The inning was led off by none other than savvy, one-legged veteran, John Merrill. Followed by a string of hits from Tom Loesch and the top of the order, MVP found themselves in unfamiliar territory, winning comfortably with an 8-3 lead after 3.

The rest of the game was fairly forgettable as both sides played incredibly tidy defense and a grand total of 5 runs were scored between the 4th inning to the final pitch.

11-5 MVP and the first win under the new regime.

Anticipations are high for next week’s matchup against the defending champion Boys.

Notables:

  • Loesch loses coin toss again, keeps the Bullworms’ quarter
  • Pio plays game with broken hand, gets a hit, and inspires another diving catch in the outfield
  • William Hill has placed a player prop on Zach White at +300 O/U 0.5 hits next week against Boys
  • James takes a ball off the knee and proceeds to collect 3 hits on the day
  • Pat misses game as a result of car troubles
  • Tommy Cirincione makes his case for best hair on the team
  • Open tryouts for shortstop to be held this week
